Introduction to Phi Mu

Phi Mu is a National Panhellenic sorority founded in 1852 at Wesleyan Female College in Macon, Georgia. Phi Mu promotes excellence in academics, philanthropy, sisterhood and personal growth. Our philanthropy, Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals®, raises funds for 170 member hospitals across the United States. These hospitals provide 32 million treatments each year to kids around the globe.

What is Phi Mu?

Founded in 1852 at Wesleyan College in Macon, Georgia, Phi Mu is the second oldest secret society for women in America. Phi Mu Fraternity promotes sisterhood, personal and intellectual growth, and service to others while encouraging academic excellence and providing a supportive environment for members. Throughout its history, Phi Mu has helped young women become educated citizens and better persons by stressing the importance of philanthropic endeavors.

Phi Mu has chapters across the United States and over 200,000 initiated members. The Fraternity is governed by an Executive Board, which consists of nine elected officers who serve two-year terms. Between National Conventions, the Executive Board provides policy guidance to the National Headquarters staff. The staff coordinates educational programs and services for collegiate chapters, alumnae associations and individual members.

What is Phi Mu’s philanthropy?

Phi Mu’s philanthropy is called “Make-A-Wish.” Make-A-Wish grants the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions to enrich the human experience with hope, strength and joy.

Since 1984, Phi Mu has raised more than $25 million dollars for Make-A-Wish. In 2015 alone, Phi Mu chapters across the country raised over $1.6 million dollars and granted the wishes of 140 children. That equals nearly one wish granted for every $11,500 donated!

In 2016, Phi Mu was named the National Partner of the Year by Make-A-Wish. This honor is bestowed upon the organization that has made the biggest impact on Wish Kids and their families in a single year.

How Phi Mu’s Philanthropy Makes a Difference

Since its founding in 1852, Phi Mu has philanthropically supported children in need through its partnership with Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals (CMNH). To date, Phi Mu has donated more than $37 million to CMNH, and its efforts have resulted in local, state and national recognition.

How much money has Phi Mu raised for its philanthropy?

Since Phi Mu’s founding in 1852, our members have actively raised funds for charities close to their hearts. One of our main philanthropic efforts is supporting children’s hospitals through Miracle Day. each year on Miracle Day, all Phi Mu Chapters across the nation come together to raise money for children’s miracles. In 2019, Phi Mu raised a total of $5 million dollars on Miracle Day alone!

What are some of the ways Phi Mu has raised money for its philanthropy?

Palliative care is any form of medical care or treatment that focuses on reducing the severity of disease symptoms, improving quality of life, and supporting patients and their families through the provision of relief from pain and stress.

Phi Mu has raised money for its philanthropy through a number of different methods, including bake sales, car washes, fashion shows, and other special events. In addition, the organization also accepts donations from individuals and businesses. All of the money raised by Phi Mu goes towards Palliative care research, education, and patient care initiatives.

What impact has Phi Mu’s philanthropy had?

Since 1952, our national philanthropy has been Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals (CMNH). Phi Mu is committed to CMNH’s vision of creating a world where all children can receive life-saving medical care.

To date, we have raised over $30 million for CMNH. In the 2015-2016 fiscal year alone, Phi Mu chapters across the country raised $2.7 million through a variety of fundraisers such as bake sales, car washes, baseball tournaments and more. These donations help to fund research initiatives, purchase life-saving equipment and support families during their child’s hospital stay.

Each year, Phi Mu chapters partner with their local CMN Hospital to plan and execute a Radiothon event. This on-air event raises pledges and awareness for the hospital through stories of hope shared by patients, families, doctors and nurses. In 2016, Phi Mu chapters raised over $1 million forChildren’s Miracle Network Hospitals through Radiothon events held at 46 different hospitals across the country.

In addition to our financial contributions, Phi Mu members also donate their time to CMN Hospitals through volunteering and other service projects. Our sisters visit patients, help with in-hospital events and assist with fundraising efforts throughout the year.

After a successful year of philanthropic fundraising, Phi Mu is looking ahead to the future. The sorority has set a goal to raise even more money for its chosen charities in the coming year.
